COMMUNICATION SANDWICH

This is a video of the performance distributing sandwiches in a gallery space during the exhibition, “Communication Sandwich”. I took the idea and its work title from the exhibition title. During the preparation of the exhibition, the three participating artists were often caught in the middle of each other’s opinions, like a sandwich; sometimes I was the meat in the middle, and other times I was the bread. Communicating with people is always a repeated extension and shrinking of boundaries.
In this video, people are eating the sandwiches and are asked to respond to me in front of the camera. Some people are comfortable speaking in front, and the conversation is beyond the topic of exhibition and a sandwich. However, others are hesitant to talk as if without a camera, or they give me performative reactions out of kindness for my video work. This work is to collect people’s reactions and grasp the grand narrative from each clip. This work is my personal view of the exhibition, including the preparation and show period, and is a response to the entire exhibition process.

『Communication Sandwich』と名付けられた3人展の会期中、ギャラリースペースでサンドウイッチを配るパフォーマンスを撮影した。アイデアと作品タイトルは、展覧会のタイトルから拝借している。展覧会の準備期間中、私を含む3名のアーティストは、お互いの意見をサンドイッチのように板挟みにすることが多く、ある時は私が真ん中の肉になり、またある時はパンになった。意見を人に伝えるということは、常に境界線の延長と縮小の繰り返しである。
このビデオでは、人々はサンドイッチを食べ、カメラの前で私とコミュニケーションを取るよう求められている。何人かの人はカメラの前で話すことに抵抗がなく、展示やサンドイッチの話題を超えて会話が弾む。しかし、カメラがない時と同じように話すことをためらったり、私のビデオ作品に対する親切心からパフォーマティブなリアクションをしてくれる人もいる。この作品は、人々の反応を集め、それぞれのクリップから全体のナラティブを掴むためのものだ。 この作品は、準備期間や展示期間も含めた展覧会に対する私の個人的な見解を反映するものであり、展覧会全体のプロセスに対するレスポンスでもある。
