Mottainai Obake [Wasteful Ghost] / もったいないおばけ

I have been making many zines by hand, and I got many leftover cut-out paper out of it. I thought it is “mottainai [wasteful]”, and I can use it for something. Additionally, I did monotypes for printmaking. One of the prints made from the monotypes is called a ghost print. I think the cutout paper is also a ghost of the zines. I thought I can make a book from the cutput paper, combining these two concepts of mottainai [wasteful] and obake [ghost]. Mottainai Obake [Wasteful Ghost] is a word that Japanese parents or grandparents use to kids, when they try to leave their food, like grains of rice. They say “Mottainai Obake will come after you” to kids. This ghost appeared in front of myself for leaving the cutouts, so I decided to make a book that its inside is empty.
Zineを何冊も手作りしていると、切り抜いた紙の余りがたくさん出てくる。もったいない、何かに使えるのではないかとずっと思っていた。そんな時、モノタイプの版画を作った。モノタイプで作った版画のひとつにゴーストプリントというのがある。Zineを切り抜いた後の紙もzineのおばけなのではないかと思う。「もったいない」と「おばけ」、この2つのコンセプトを組み合わせて、切り抜いた紙で本を作れないかと考えた。
「もったいないおばけ」というのは、日本の親や祖父母が子供に使う言葉で、子供が米粒などご飯を残そうとする時に「もったいないおばけがくるよ」と言う。このおばけが、切り抜いた紙を残した自分の前に現れたので、中身が空っぽの本を作ることにした。
