“What is poetry for you?” I was asked by Mariko, the best poetry teacher, and I was wondering what I should answer. There are many components that make text a poem, such as rhythm, repetition, word choice… etc. I value those things as well as others do, but having a good internal rhythm does not fit my attitude toward writing. Rather, I want to take out poetic essense out from outside of poetry. What to be making a fake, when making a poem based on stories and pictures? What changes literally and orally, when reciting a text-based poem? Suppose my poem survives 100 years from now, and what would people in the future interpret my poems as?
So, I would answer Mariko’s question in this way: for me, poetry is a journaling book. Like doodling freehand, this chapbook experiments with how much a poem can loosen its form.
「あなたにとって、詩とは何ですか？」最高の詩の先生であるマリコ先生に聞かれ、何と答えようか悩んだ。リズム、繰り返し、言葉の選び方......等々、文章を詩にする要素はたくさんある。それらも大切にしているが、内に秘めるリズムが良いというのは、私の文章に対する姿勢には合わない。私はどちらかと言うと、詩の外側から、詩的な要素を抽出したい。物語や写真を元に詩を作る時、何を以てフェイクとするか。文字ベースの詩を朗読する際に、文字と口述ではどのように変化するのか。私の詩が100年後まで残ったとして、未来の人々はどう解釈をするのか。
というわけで、マリコ先生からの質問にはこう答える。私にとって、詩は自由帳だ。フリーハンドで落書きをするように、詩はどこまで形を緩めることができるのか、実験をする詩集である。
