Emulsion Project（Tentative title)
Recently, the artist, Lena Takabayashi is making an art project with a theme of “emulsification.” The purpose of this project is to soften the boundary between people, based on the idea that “water and oil can never mix, but emulsification is possible.” This project sets video as a main medium, and I will be exhibiting works at a gallery in May 2025, combining the videos with some documentation/supplemental photos and actual PET bottles used in the workshop.
What I would like to ask to the participants:
1. Lena Takabayashi will hand you a PET bottle with a yolk, oil, salt, and vinegar in it (all the necessary things will be prepared by the artist).
2. Please shake the PET bottle as many times as you like, anytime when you feel like you want to shake it. After you shake it for a while, the mayo in the various states will be in each other’s bottle.
3. Let’s eat the mayo with a cucumber when you finish making it!
4. Please leave a message, anything you felt about the Mayo Making Workshop, review of the mayo, etc., on the bottle with a marker.
5. After you wrote a message on the bottle, hand the bottle to Lena Takabayashi, and let’s call it a day! Thank you very much for your cooperation.

現在、私、高林怜奈は、「乳化」をテーマとしたアートプロジェクトを制作しています。 “水と油は混ざることはないが、乳化は可能である”というアイデアに基づき、人と人の間にある心理的な境界線を柔らかくすることが目的です。 主にビデオベースの作品であり、記録・補足写真と実際に使ったペットボトルを、完成作品として2025年5月に展示予定です。
参加者の方にお願いしたいこと
1. 高林怜奈がペットボトルに卵黄、油、塩、酢を入れて渡します（全てこちらで用意します）。
2. この会に参加している間、振りたくなった時に何度でも好きなだけボトルを振ってください。しばらく気ままに振っていると、それぞれのボトルの中には様々な状態のマヨネーズが入っているはずです。
3. 出来上がったら、きゅうりにマヨネーズを付けてたべましょう！
4. マヨネーズのボトルにマヨネーズの味や振ってみた感想、思ったこと、など、メッセージを自由に油性ペンで記入してください。
5. メッセージを書き終わったらボトルを高林怜奈に渡して終わりです！ご協力ありがとうございました。 参加者の方には展示のお誘いを4月下旬〜5月上旬頃にメールにてお送りしますので、よろしければお越しください。お待ちしております。
Every individual belongs to multiple, different communities. I am a bird with a variety of feathers, and I show a different face to different people. I like friends from all my communities, but each of them from different groups does not overlap in their lives. Although they might know each other through my stories, they are birds of different feathers.
I gathered people from different communities I belong to, and made mayonnaise by shaking plastic bottles together. My friends also invited their friends whom I do not know, and people at the workshop were strange to many of the other participants. Sometimes their race, ethnicity, and languages also differed. The purpose of this workshop is to let people talk to each other, with those who would not meet in their ordinary lives.
For example, it is difficult to build a life-long relationship with someone who has a totally different life and hobbies; however, we can talk and be nice to each other without becoming life-time friends. In the space in which people’s communities overlap slightly or never, they talk about something in common, like the weather, for example.
In this workshop, we had a common topic, which is making mayonnaise in plastic bottles. Water and oil are not compatible, but emulsification is possible. The act of shaking bottled mayonnaise softens the awkwardness of the conversation with new people, for doing the same thing in the shared, open space.
人々は皆、複数の異なるコミュニティに属している。類は友を呼ぶと言うが、私には様々な類の友人がおり、様々な人に違った顔を見せる。私はどのコミュニティの友人も好きだが、それぞれのコミュニティに属する彼らの人生は重ならない。私の話を通して知ることはあっても、彼らは異なる類に属する人々なのだ。
所属するコミュニティの違う人たちを集め、ペットボトルを振ってマヨネーズを作ってもらった。友人が友人を呼び、参加者の多くが初対面となった。時には参加者の人種、国籍、言語が異なることもあった。このワークショップの目的は、普段は交わらない人々を対面させることにある。
例えば、私と全く違う趣味を持ち、全く違う人生を歩む誰かは、生涯の友にはなりづらいだろう。だが、人生までを共にする友人同士にならずとも、互いに世間話をしたり、関係を築いたりすることはできる。人々のコミュニティが少し重なるか重ならないかの空間においては、天気の話など、共通の話で盛り上がることが多い。
このワークショップのコミュニティ内には、ペットボトルでマヨネーズを作るという共通の話題が生まれた。水と油は混ざらないが、乳化は可能である。ペットボトルのマヨネーズを振るという行為は、共有のオープンな空間で同じことをすることで、初対面の人との会話のぎこちなさを和らげてくれる。
