Recently, I have been using an avatar that looks like an alien as a substitute for myself, and I have had the feeling that my own self and the avatar’s ego are merging within me. In English, there are words like sister/brother-in-law, mother/father-in-law. So, can I not be in-law of myself? I decided to become MYSELF IN-LAW by installing my own avatar into myself.
I used cyanotype to mimic indigo dyeing (aizome) on kimono fabric. There is no original connection between cyanotype and aizome. By mimicking pseudo-aizome, I am questioning the concept of “family” in our time.
Also, in the creating process, I adopted the technique of Sashiko. Sashiko is an embroidery technique applied to kimonos (mainly indigo dyed ones) in the Edo period, when cloth was precious, for protection against cold and for reinforcement. On the contrary of the front side being neat, the reverse side of a sashiko is particularly difficult to take care. The stitching together of myself and my avatar with a single thread shows that the front-facing me/my avatar and the back-facing us are two sides of the same coin.
ここ最近、エイリアンのように見えるアバターを自分自身の身代わりとして使っているが、私の中で自分自身とアバターの自我が混ざり合っていくような感覚があった。英語にはsister/brother in-law、mother/father in-lawという言葉がある。日本語では義理のきょうだい、親、などと言う。では、私自身はin-lawになれないのだろうか？
私は自分自身のアバターを私自身にインストールすることでmyself in-lawになることにした。サイアノタイプを使って着物の生地に藍染を擬似的に再現した。サイアノタイプと藍染には起源の繋がりは無い。繋がりはなくとも擬似的に藍染を模倣することで、現代における「家族」の概念に疑問を投げかけている。
そして、この作品を作るにあたり、刺子の手法を採用した。刺子は、江戸時代に布が貴重だった時に防寒や補強の目的で着物（主に藍色のもの）に施されてきた刺繍だ。刺子は特に裏側の処理が難しい。表は綺麗でも裏はぐちゃぐちゃになりやすい。１本の糸で私自身と私のアバターが縫い合わされることで、表向きの私/アバターと、裏に見え隠れする私たちは表裏一体であることを示している。
